Silent Sam â€Å"UNC can no longer say silent on Silent Sam,† Julia Craven from the Huffington Post wrote. Silent Sam is a memorial in the middle of the University of North Carolina’s campus built to honor students who left school and fought in the Civil War. The Civil War was a war between the northern and southern states fought over slavery. Many students now think that the statue is offensive because the people that it honors fought for the South and supported slavery. Silent Sam was erected in 1913 for 321 UNC students who fought in the Civil War. It’s called Silent Sam because he has no ammunition so he’s quiet and then just Sam. The university still had classes during the war.The statue faces North as if it’s fighting for the confederates. Some students vandalized it because they thought that it was offencive and shouldn’t be there. In conclusion The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says this is an important topic about something bad that happened about the topic. On the statue s 100th birthday there was controversy. They want U.N.C. to remove Silent Sam from the campus.They think that it’s rude to the Northerners from the war and stuff.The U.N.C. students get mad because it’s supposed to be about state movements not slavery.The statue is for students who died in the war and that seems to slip some students minds.These students changed the campus today they made an impact on UNC.In conclusion Kevin says that this an important topic And that students
